Hi, I'm Benjamin, 33, a bookkeeper from Basel. I've seen hundreds of sets of books — from shoeboxes full of crumpled receipts to polished annual reports ready for signing.

What's always bothered me: for the vast majority of self-employed people, bookkeeping is not a complicated problem. But the tools pretend it is. Four-digit chart of accounts. Debits and credits. Software that reads like a textbook for aspiring accountants.

A sole proprietor designing websites, running a landscaping business, or working as a consultant needs something entirely different: a place to store receipts, write invoices, and get a single number for their tax return at the end of the year. That's it.

My vision

I want to lower the barrier to starting your own business. Anyone considering self-employment faces a mountain of questions: What legal form? Do I need an accountant? What about VAT? And then there's the bookkeeping — a field you apparently need a degree in to get right.

That's not true. With the right tools, bookkeeping for a sole proprietorship is not rocket science. MILQ is my attempt to build that toolset. No chart of accounts. No unnecessary buttons. Just what you actually need — from your first invoice to your annual financial statement.

Why MILQ

The name comes from the Milchbüechli — the little notebook where Swiss milkmen used to record what came in and went out. One column for income, one for expenses, the difference is the result. That principle is over a hundred years old and works just as well today. I've just wrapped it in a modern interface.

What MILQ is not

MILQ is not bookkeeping software for large companies. Not an ERP. Not a payroll tool. And it never will be. I build deliberately narrow — because that's exactly the strength: a tool that does one thing, and does it right.

Worth saying clearly: I'm a bookkeeper, not a licensed auditor — for a statutory audit or binding tax advice you'll still need someone with the right accreditation. MILQ helps with your day-to-day bookkeeping and annual financial statement, not with everything around it.
